Reasons of steroid use

Steroids may be classified into 3 groups: corticosteroids, estrogens and progestogens, and anabolic-androgenic steroids.
Nature of corticosteroids is similar to that of hormones produced in the adrenal cortex. Corticosteroids may be in form of creams, ointment, inhalation medications, etc. They are taken in case of inflammations, allergy, disorders of respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal and other systems.
Estrogens and progestogens represent female sex hormones. These substances promote developing female secondary features. Birth control tablets contain these compounds.
Anabolic-androgenic steroids represent medicines that are also widely used in medicine. They are able to treat some types of breast cancer, testicular cancer, anemia, etc. These medications are often recommended to get better and faster recovery after certain operations. Burn victims, individuals with HIV/AIDS administer anabolic-androgenic steroids in order to prevent muscle loss. Some steroids are also directed for treatment of osteoporosis. These medicines are also taken in case of infertility.
Moreover, anabolic-androgenic steroids are administered for athletic purposes. These preparations have ability to stimulate muscle growth and promote enhancing endurance. That’s why many sportspeople and bodybuilders use them for performance-enhancing effects. Some anabolic-androgenic steroids have also ability to promote burning fat, making muscles hard.
Application of anabolic-androgenic steroids for non-therapeutic needs is illegal under laws of certain countries. Those that manufacture, distribute, purchase and take these drugs illegally may be sentenced to imprisonment and/or fines. These drugs belong to illegal substances in several countries because they may cause various negative reactions. While some undesirable effects are mild and disappear after discontinuation of intake, others are grave and even irreversible. Those who want to acquire benefits, taking steroids for therapeutic purposes, should take these medicines under instructions of health care providers.
