WADA president: WADA doesn’t intend to ban caffeine

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) confirms that caffeine should belong to banned substances of the World Anti-Doping Agency. The president of the AOC John Coates notes that caffeine promotes addiction to sleeping pills and tranquilizers.
It is known that the Australian swimmers who competed at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games used sleeping tablets Stilnox. So, the president of the AOC notices that application of caffeine resulted in intake of Stilnox.
Stilnox is ordinarily sold under the commercial name Zolpidem. It is a sleeping remedy that is taken to cure insomnia.
Coates confirms that athletes take caffeine in order to increase performance. Consumption of this substance leads to insomnia. So, sportspersons have to use sleeping tablets for treatment of insomnia.
The AOC and Swimming Australia desire to ban usage of caffeine. It is their response to the disgrace linked with Grant Hackett. A doctor recommended administering Stilnox to this swimmer at the time of the 2003 World Championships. As a result, Grant Hackett became addicted to this sleeping remedy.
Grant Hackett is a famous swimmer. He won certain competitions, including the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Alan Thompson, the former coach of the Australian Olympic Team, has also affirmed that intake of Stilnox is widely spread among Australian swimmers.
Stilnox was never on the list of forbidden preparations. Anti-doping agencies didn’t conduct tests to disclose usage of this drug.
But as for caffeine, earlier it was prohibited by the WADA. But since it became widely spread and used in society, it was excluded from the list of banned medicines.
John Fahey, the president of the WADA, states that the WADA made the right decision and excluded caffeine from list of prohibited drugs. He confirmed that caffeine would not be included in the list of banned substances again.
However many experts confirm that caffeine is a performance enhancer, John Fahey contests this affirmation. He claims that caffeine doesn’t influence on performance. The president of the WADA concludes that no any scientific literature describes capacity of caffeine to enhance performance.

Court of Arbitration for Sports allowed former steroid users to participate in Olympic Games

The British track sprinter Dwain Chambers, that successfully served his 2-year ban for administration of anabolic steroids, was chosen to be the representative of Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics.
Chambers worries about the way to represent the home country. When it comes to the British Olympic Association (BOA), they are not happy to see him participating in the 2012 Olympics. Certain former British Olympians don’t support the consumer of steroids as well.
The runner applied the steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) elaborated by Patrick Arnold. After Don Catlin developed a method which could disclose intake of THG, Dwain Chambers tested positive for this steroid. It was on November 7, 2003.
Of course, application of the steroid spoiled his reputation. When he attempted to come back to professional sports, the BOA decided to change the laws in order to prevent appearing of the sprinter in the 2012 Summer Olympics. The BOA has elaborated the rules which ban steroid users from Olympics for the whole life.
Introducing this rule, the BOA violated the doping code of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This case resulted in numerous disputes and news.
The case was even presented in the Court of Arbitration for Sports. Loyd Moynihan, the chairman of the BOA, put great efforts in order to prevent appearing of Dwain Chambers or other consumers of steroids at Olympics. Such former Olympians, as Sebastian Coe and Daley Thompson, loudly supported efforts of the BOA.
Daley Thompson stated that Britain should not compromise. He confirmed that Britain should not listen to the rest of the world that don’t desire to have high standards in sports. The Court of Arbitration for Sports acted on behalf of the WADA. Dwain Chambers was allowed to represent Britain at the 2012 London Olympics. This aspect turned out to be an open door for other sportspersons that have served their suspensions to participate in Olympics.
The cyclist David Millar and the shot-putter Carl Myerscough that have served their suspensions for usage of steroids will compete at the 2012 Olympics as well.
Despites spending much time to keep former steroid users from Olympic Games, the BOA ultimately claimed that not only the sprinter Dwain chambers but also Millar, Myerscough or any other athlete that has served a suspension successfully may compete at Olympics. The CEO of the BOA Andy Hunt has claimed that any athlete is treated the same way.

Slovenian Constitution bans to extradite its citizens to other countries

Lately a huge steroid empire was busted in Austria. It was defined that this company got 40 million Euros due to illegal distribution of steroids. Mihael Karner was considered to be the leader of the steroid empire. The USA asked Austrian authorities to extradite this man to the US. But he wasn’t extradited. He paid one million Euros to Austrian authorities that sent him to his native country Slovenia.
Slovenia’s laws are not the same as Austrian’s ones. According to the Slovenian Constitution, it is forbidden to extradite Slovenians to another country. Mihael Karner is a lucky man. If he had not avoided the extradition to the USA, he would have probably gone to 40 years in prison.
Federal prosecutors started the investigation connected with this steroid empire in 2005. The steroid ring started to function earlier. Federal prosecutors defined that since 2000 till 2008 the company got 40 million Euros due to illegal sale of steroids.
Federal prosecutors determined in 2005 that Mihael Karner and his wife were implicated in illicit sale of steroids but they couldn’t pursue them because the Karners were in Austria. But later steroid laws in Austria were altered due to suppression by the US. Furthermore, the US promoted the arrest of Mihael Karner and his wife.
Although the US puts efforts to enforce European countries and other countries of the world to extradite steroid dealers to the USA, it doesn’t have essential success in this area. But the persons that were implicated in “Musclebear” and “British Dragon” were extradited from Cyprus and Thailand to the USA. That time the US celebrated its victory.
As for Mihael Karner, the USA hoped that he would be extradited. That’s why the US was shocked, when it was found that Karner reached Slovenia safely. So, the USA was defeated this time in the war on steroids.

Caroline Spelman doesn’t want her son to become professional bodybuilder

Mrs. Spelman and her husband put efforts in order to prevent publishing news about her son’s usage of steroids. She spent huge sums of money in courts for this goal. But as you know, anyone could read the news about the youngest British athlete that was caught utilizing forbidden products and banned from rugby. Each person expected that Jonny Spelman would be thankful to his parents for the efforts to hide the truth. But the situation turned out to be opposite.
The teenager wants to become a celebrated professional bodybuilder. He intends to win the title of Mr. Olympia.
As for steroid use, Jonny Spelman was very open. He wrote about own intake of steroids on Bodybuilding.com and on bodybuilding forums of other sites. He noted that he took Anavar, Dianabol, Winstrol and Testosterone. Jonny Spelman shared own experience and asked for instructions about administration of several steroids and combinations. The teenager also asked about ways of being on PCT.
Since he wrote about usage of steroids openly, administrators of the site Bodybuilding.com banned him. It caused the search of Jonny’s school room. As a result, drug paraphernalia was discovered.
The young sportsperson notices that however his parents are rich, they don’t want to support financially his efforts to become a professional bodybuilder. They have told him that he should move out, if he wants to be a bodybuilder. But the young athlete has goals and he doesn’t desires to leave them. He intends to host workout videos on YouTube and get money in exchange. The young athlete concludes that viewers of YouTube play a significant role in his life because they support his efforts.

Swedish research linked with steroids and fat distribution

A valuable research was conducted at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University. Specialists studied and determined relations between application of steroids, body fat distribution and certain side results of anabolic steroids. The research has manifested that users of steroids may experience abnormal fat distribution that can cause heart attacks and other problems related to cardiovascular system.
The results of the study and conclusions are published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
10 elite lifters from Sweden were involved in the research. They use anabolic steroids regularly. Thus, it was studied role of steroids in fat distribution.
It is affirmed that lifters that apply anabolic-androgenic steroids have risks suffering from heart attacks. It has been studied by specialists at Lulea University of Technology and Umea University the way body fat is distributed in lifters who apply steroids having anabolic and androgenic properties. It has been seen that unhealthy fat distribution may be a reason for dysfunctions of cardiovascular system.
The lifters that were involved in the study were divided into two groups. Body fat distribution was studied in lifters of the two groups. The lifters of one group applied anabolic steroids. The lifters of another group didn’t use steroids.
The study has shown that those who administer steroids have more reduced fat deposits below the waist. So, they have more reduced levels of gynoid fat.
DEXA scanner which is ordinarily applied to study osteoporosis has been utilized in order to measure fat distribution during the study.

Gold medalist is sentenced to ban for steroid use

The Canadian wrestler Colin Daynes tested positive for forbidden products. Unfortunately, his Olympic dreams will not be real. He was banned for 2 years.
Last year the sportsman was chosen for the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame.
The athlete was sentenced to the ban by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sports. He failed a drug test, when he got a gold medal in the 74-kg weight category.
The sportsman tested positive for Drostanolone, Boldenone, Tamoxifen and Furosemide. Every of these products is in the list of forbidden drugs of the World Anti-Doping Agency. As for Drostanolone and Boldenone, they belong to anabolic steroids. Furosemide represents a diuretic drug. It is applied as a masking agent for other medications. Tamoxifen is a drug which is advised for prevention of unwanted consequences which appear due to application of steroids.
The athlete admitted to intake of prohibited products and accepted the sentence. He claimed that he took the prohibited drugs for getting or recovery from an injury. Colin Daynes told to The Star Monday night that he desired to recover in order to take part in the 2012 Olympics. The athlete noticed that a naturopathic doctor advised to use these preparations. The wrestler also added that he hadn’t known that the medicines were forbidden. According to his affirmations, if he had known, he wouldn’t have competed.
The wrestler was going to represent Canada at the Olympics again. The wrestler represented his country at the 1996 Olympics that took place in Atlanta.
He didn’t put efforts to defense himself. The athlete noticed that there was no any difference whether the banned medications were found in the blood or not. They were in the system.
Previously this wrestler also competed in mixed martial arts. Colin Daynes had to qualify internationally. The wrestler thought that he would compete at the Olympic Games in London last time. Then his career comes to the end. But he was banned  due to positives for prohibited products.
Bill Hogarth,
Colin Daynes’ coach notices that that the things are too bad. But the wrestler didn’t want to lie. Hogarth hopes that the wrestler’s reputation will not be destroyed. His career was marked by getting of 62 gold medals, 11 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Australian judge is convinced that 1 kg of testosterone was purchased for personal use by one man

Carlton Alloysius Hayes, an Australian man, was caught possessing almost a kg of Testosterone Propionate. He ordered powder of this medication per internet and acquired it from overseas. This man also desired to purchase benzyl benzoate, a chemical that is used in order to make solution for injections from powder. When police officers found out that this person ordered this chemical, they asked him about purpose of purchasing it. Carlton Alloysius Hayes said that he wanted to get it for a friend. But he noticed that he had forgotten the name of the friend.
Then Hayes himself contacted policemen and asked them to come to his place. When they came, Carlton Alloysius Hayes showed that he possessed 2 bags of white powder. He also admitted that he had ordered benzyl benzoate in order to mix it with the powder and prepare liquid for injections.
Hayes weighed approximately 156 kg, when he was in the court. He claimed that he couldn’t lose weight, although he trained at the gym. So, he administered steroids to lose weight and look better. This person affirmed that he hadn’t had any plan to distribute steroids. He obtained the testosterone powder for personal usage.
A defense attorney for Hayes claimed that his client had a good reputation. He always worked hardly.
However he had to be sentenced to imprisonment because he bought steroids from overseas, the judge’s decision was to sentence him to several months of suspended jail. So, he avoided prison.

Successful steroid investigation in Poland

A criminal group that was dealing with manufacture and sale of anabolic steroids was busted in Poland. More than 90 police officers and frontier guard were implicated in the investigation linked with this illegal drug ring. Customers were mainly from North America. Police officers arrested 19 individuals: 6 women and 13 men. They were charged with illicit manufacture and sale of steroids and money laundering.
Investigators determined that the group was dealing with steroids since March 2008. The group advertised steroids for getting of muscle mass and well-being in general. The drugs were offered for sale on internet. Persons from the USA, Canada, France, Belgium, etc. placed orders and got illegal medicines.  Steroids were packed in fake packages and delivered to customers. There was a person who was responsible for getting money and transferring it to members of the drug ring.
Homes and business offices of the group were raided. Police officers found large quantities of steroids and packages which were prepared to be shipped abroad. Some cars, including BMW X6, Mercedes S500 and Jeep Grand, watches, jewelry and other objects were seized. The total value of seized objects and money was estimated. It was circa 1 million Polish zlotys.
It was set by police officers that 3 individuals were leaders of the drug ring. They face 15 years in prison.
This investigation conducted by Polish police officers was successful. It was not the first successful steroid investigation in this country. Last year Poland’s police busted another illegal drug ring. 7 individuals were detained. Approximately 80 policemen participated in that investigation. Police officers also reported about preparations which were found in possession of that drug ring.

New findings related to dutasteride

According to a trial, treatment with dutasteride (Avodart), a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, doesn’t affect muscle mass in healthy males that take testosterone.
A research linked with this issue was performed. While fat-free mass was enhanced by 0,6-7,1 kg during 20 weeks in males who applied dutasteride and Testosterone Enanthate, fat-free mass was increased by 0,8-8,1 kg in those that were given placebo and testosterone. As for muscle strength, sexual functions and volume of prostate, they didn’t differ in males of these two groups.
5-alpha reductase inhibitors are used clinically to cure benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and androgenic alopecia. These are dysfunctions that usually trouble middle-aged and old men.
DHT represents the chief metabolite of testosterone. But the function of this metabolite in human development is not clearly understood. It is supposed that DHT has vital role in development of prostate and phallus.
Middle-aged and elder males with decreased testosterone levels who use testosterone drugs have risks connected with reduced muscle mass and sexual disorders.
Scientists also study and develop nonsteroidal selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs). It is confirmed that SARMs and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors are safe because DHT is probably not necessary for effects on muscle mass, strength and sexual life. It is also doubted whether DHT plays any role for androgen’s effects on hematocrit, hemoglobin, lipids and several other factors.
Shalender Bhasin and his colleagues at the Boston University have performed a clinical trial in order to define whether 5?-reduction to DHT is needed in order to mediate androgen’s effects on fat-free mass. Furthermore, the experts evaluated role of 5?-reduction on sexual activity, hematocrit and levels of lipid.
The study conducted by Bhasin and his colleagues involved healthy men who were 18- 50 years old and had normal testosterone levels. They administered Testosterone Enanthate and dutasteride or placebo. Dosages of Testosterone Enanthate ranged from 50 to 600 mg weekly.
Since 5 ?-reductase inhibitors enhance testosterone levels, all males were given also gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist in order to block natural testosterone.
The results of the research displayed that fat-free mass was enhanced due to intake of testosterone. It didn’t differ significantly in males of these two groups. Muscle power which was also increased due to application of testosterone didn’t differ between the two groups too. Sexual activity, prostate volume, sebum production, hemoglobin, acne, hematocrit didn’t differ significantly between those who used placebo and dutasteride.
The specialists affirm that effectiveness of 5?-reductase inhibitors can be limited in men that have normal or high levels of testosterone. That’s why it is necessary to check levels of testosterone in order to set how bodies will respond to 5 ?-reductase inhibitors.
So, the research has displayed that muscle mass is not affected by 5?-reductase inhibitors.  Males should know that if they have enhanced testosterone levels or introduce exogenous testosterone in their bodies, 5?-reductase inhibitors will not lead to shrunken prostate.

10 persons that were linked with international drug ring were detained by Spain’s national police

Spain’s police busted a large doping ring.
According to affirmations of police officers, sportspeople who tested positive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2010 Vuelta a Espana got steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs from this doping ring.
10 persons who were implicated in this drug ring were arrested. Professional cyclists and other athletes had links with this illicit drug network.  It was a popular source of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs in the world of top athletes.
The investigation was codenamed “Operation Skype”. The physician  Alberto Beltran Nino was the leader of the doping ring. He is a former doctor of Liberty Seguros team. This person was detained and sentenced to prison, when he tried to flee from Madrid to Columbia. Cezar Perez, the former personal coach of the champion Marta Dominguez, was also detained by Spain’s police officers.
Although the center of the doping ring was established in Barcelona, it was a multinational company. The ring was connected with Morocco and Columbia. Steroids, HGH and EPO CERA were sold by this illegal drug ring.
Dr. Beltran also worked with Xacobeo-Galicia team. David Garcia, the rider of this team, tested positive for EPO at the 2010 Vuelta.
The investigation began summer last year. It was originally related to the runner Jose Luis Blanco after he was sentenced to 2-year ban because of positives for prohibited medications.
