More and more kids are subjected to tonsillectomies. The number of surgeries in kids younger than 15 years old has increased essentially.
After tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy children may have vomiting and nausea. Thus, health care providers prescribe taking corticosteroids during operations in order to lower these post-operation adverse consequences.
Unluckily, while corticosteroids minimize risks/severity linked with nausea and vomiting, they are associated with certain other problems. They may lead to bleeding during and after tonsillectomies. Recent studies have manifested that the number of complications after tonsillectomies has increased during several last years. Since number of tonsillectomies becomes more increased, complications occur more frequently too.
Some scientists decided to determine whether bleeding occurs after tonsillectomies on account of corticosteroids. They tried to learn whether there is any obvious difference in appearing of bleeding between children that take the corticosteroid dexamethasone during tonsillectomies and those that are not given this medicine. Thus, the scientists enrolled more than 300 children in the trial.
Results of the study have showed that bleeding of the levels I and II are enhanced by 5% in those who take a single dosage of dexamethasone during tonsillectomy.
Thus, corticosteroids don’t increase the risk connected with post-operation bleeding essentially. However scientists doubt about safety of corticosteroids taken during tonsillectomies, they don’t enhance severe bleeding events substantially.
