More than 500 persons were contaminated with fungal meningitis after they had applied Methylprednisolone injections produced by the New England Compounding Center (NECC). More than 30 persons died from this illness. No one must have doubted that the contamination turned out to be a great tragedy for some persons and their families. Nevertheless, anti-doping organizations tried to benefit from the case. What did they do? They began to demonize anabolic steroids. It was noticed by the media that anabolic steroids could cause the fatal disease fungal meningitis.
Lately the Bay County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation connected with illegal manufacture of anabolic steroids. It learnt that anabolic steroids were produced by an underground lab in unsterile conditions. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office stated that they conducted the investigation for prevention of contamination with fungal meningitis in future. According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, if somebody administers anabolic steroids manufactured in unsterile conditions, he/she may be contaminated with fungal meningitis.
In fact, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office showed own ignorance related to anabolic steroids and risks related to contamination with fungal meningitis. An individual may face fungal meningitis, if he/she uses medicines that are injected directly into the central nervous system. Methylprednisolone Acetate injections are administered into the central nervous system. That’s why these contaminated corticosteroids caused the fungal meningitis outbreak. As for anabolic steroids, they are not injected into the central nervous system. They are chiefly administered into muscles. That’s why it is impossible to be contaminated with fungal meningitis while using anabolic steroids. If you apply anabolic steroids that are manufactured in unsterile conditions, you may get several additional health problems. But you will never get contaminated with fungal meningitis while administering anabolic steroids for therapeutic or even for athletic purposes.
Thus, the fungal meningitis outbreak caused by administration of contaminated Methylprednisolone Acetate injections was just a condition to blame anabolic steroids. Notice, please: Methylprednisolone Acetate is not an anabolic steroid. It belongs to corticosteroids.
