Negative influence of steroids on brain

If you belong to those that read news about steroids, you may confirm that almost each article mentions about “roid rage” which is considered to be one of the gravest side reactions of these medicines. Anabolic steroids are blamed for many violations, murders and other crimes. It is noted that these medicines may cause uncontrolled aggression that leads to abnormal behavior. Although it is not proven scientifically whether steroids can really cause “roid rage”, media notices about this negative effect very frequently. Unfortunately, certain other serious undesirable results are rarely mentioned in articles.
Teenagers should be especially informed about some specific adverse consequences that may appear in them, if they administer steroids in their teen years. The professors Leslie Henderson and Ann Clark of the Giesel School of Medicine in Dartmouth notice that these medications can have very negative impact on teenagers’ brains. These scientists have conducted several researches and made conclusions, basing on the results of their researches. These professors claim that steroids may cause in adolescents something graver than uncontrolled aggression.
According to Leslie Henderson and Ann Clark, steroids are too dangerous for teenagers because this group of users may have certain specific dangerous side results that don’t appear in adult consumers of steroids. The specialists notice that steroids may affect the brain in teenagers. Thus, the brain’s structure and functions may be destroyed in adolescents because of steroids. Furthermore, these negative results may be permanent. It means that brain’s dysfunctions which are shown through unusual behavior may present even when the teenagers grow up. Thus, negative psychological effects may be displayed even in their adulthood.
But it is important to notice that the studies conducted by Leslie Henderson and Ann Clark have enrolled animals. So, these affirmations are made on the basis of animals’ reactions to steroid use. One may doubt whether effects of steroids on teenagers’ brains are the same as those on animals. Nonetheless, Leslie Henderson is sure that these affirmations are true for humans as well.
Moreover, it has been defined that adverse consequences of steroids on adolescents are more lasting than those that occur in adult steroid users.
Leslie Henderson collaborates in her researches with such professors, as Marie Onakomaiya, Donna Porter and Joseph Oberlander.
Leslie Henderson confirms that it is seen that steroids affect adolescents’ behavior. As we know, behavior is controlled by brain. Since behavior is abnormal, the brain’s structure and functions have certain disorders.
So, it is necessary to warn adolescents about all potential risks linked with application of steroids. If they know about these probable side effects, they will be able to make a right decision linked with steroids.
